Ravi Coltrane is the american post-bop jazz saxophonist, son of jazz pianist Alice Coltrane, and one of the greatest figures in jazz – saxophonist John Coltrane. Parents gave him the name of the famous master of sitar – Ravi Shankar. He studied saxophone at the California Institute of Arts. Significant impact on his style had Steve Coleman and created by him musical movement in Brooklyn M-Base.At that time he also performed alongside artists such as Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Branford Marsalis or another musician associated with his father, pianist McCoy Tyner. In 2008, Ravi became part of The Blue Note 7, a septet formed that year in honor of the 70th anniversary of Blue Note Records – label which has released his last widely acclaimed album „Spirit Fiction.”

His music career began from collaboration with Elvin Jones – one of the greatest jazz drummers and a member of the John Coltrane band. He also worked with Geri Allen , Kenny Barron , Steve Coleman and Wallace Roney . With Antoine Roney founded the Grand Central.

Today, Ravi Coltrane is recognized not only as a “son of John Coltrane ,” but as an artistic personality with a distinctive style. In the profession of musician he works longer than his famous father . The saxophonist has recorded six albums . The last one – ” Spirit Fiction ” released a famous label Blue Note Records , and has been recognized by critics as the best work of an artist , confirming the status of Ravi Coltrane as one of the greatest saxophonists of his generation , in a sensational way connecting the avant-garde tradition of Ornette Coleman’s character with dozens of completely fresh ideas and masterful improvisations . Ravi Coltrane has a chance to become the next legend of jazz.
