9. Lublin Jazz Festival / (Premiere!) Joseph Wieniawski Sextet
Joseph Wieniawski, one of the greatest Polish composers and pianists, born in Lublin. He composed, among the others: symphonies, pieces for piano, chamber music, songs and romances. In 1874, in homage to the city he composed a piece for piano: “Souvenir de Lublin op.12”. In the 2017, during the celebration of 700 anniversary of granting city rights to Lublin falls 180 anniversary of the birth of the artist. Composition “Souvenir de Lublin” – romance for piano is a work that is close to jazz music. Its structure is based on a set of variations, which remains open to interpretation of a performer, what makes it close to the idea of improvisation. On the other hand, the theme tune, which composition is based on, quite clearly associates with the works of classics of free jazz, like Albert Ayler or Ornette Coleman. Joseph Wieniawski Sextet take the reinterpretation of this salon piece of Wieniawski, referring to the tradition of jazz as loud, rough and trance music. The Band consists of artists active in many fields of sound expression, but the common area of their activity is improvisation.
