9. Lublin Jazz Festival / Jazz in the City: Silva Rerum (PL)

The latest album of Anna Gadt, Zbigniew Chojnacki and Krzysztof Gradziuk, “Renaissance” contains eight songs belonging today to the canon works of composers of the Renaissance. Psalms, liturgical songs, secular songs are a model example of the contemporary view of the world, the relationship of man with God, the birth of humanism and the Reformation. Era delighted by human being and mind, and emphasizing the need for an extraordinary dignity and the free development, resulted in uneasy and often surprising for today musicians musical pieces. The story, which Gadt, Chojnacki and Gradziuk are telling is a far-reaching interpretation and sometimes only free inspiration of contemporary compositions. Above all, however, it is a thoughtful and consistently pursued narration, aimed to introduce the listener to the world of free Renaissance.
The challenge for improvising musicians is to re-reading firmly determined Renaissance compositions and look at it for
prism of total freedom of expression typical for artists. Thus, the newly released songs of Wacław of Szamotuły, Mikołaj of Krakow, Gerwazy Gorczycki, Mikołaj Gomółka and Jan of Lublin are moving, sultry, sometimes frightening and intimidating, funny, sensitive, sensual, and for many probably iconoclastic, repulsive and controversial.
