What is it all about?
In the times when bebop was at its best, musicians from different bands could meet frequently, jam together or challenge each other to musical duels. Through collective playing they shared their knowledge and various tricks. This allowed music to be constantly developing. If a newcomer was confident enough to go on stage, he could play even with giants of jazz. Miles took his first steps this way.
A similar idea accompanies Electro-Acoustic Beat Sessions (EABS), only the language of expression changed and technology went ahead. EABS deserves to be called a truly huge event, to which no other in the country can be compared. It is a joint initiative of several people, but also an extraordinary collaboration of talented musical personalities. It is also a kind of movement, an idea, and a tribute to Gil Scott Heron, J Dilli, Pete Rock, Ahmad Jamal and many other musical legends. Musicians are invited to joint sessions but no one can predict the rest. Renowned instrumentalists, who were in the audience while coming back from their own concerts, were spontaneously joining in the concerts. This was the case with Dave Liebman (who played with Elvin Jones or Miles Davis). Outstanding Polish and international rappers and singers were also invited to common jamming. So far EABS hosted Natalia Lubrano, Paulina Przybysz, Natalia Przybysz (Sistars/Archeo), Abradab, Venio, Te-Tris, Zgas, Wall-E, W.E.N.A., Jesse Boykins III (US), Tawiah (UK), Raashan Ahmad (US), Coultrain (US), Bilal (US), M.E.D. (US).
This time the musicians will play together with the singer-songwriter Mika Urbaniak.
Michelle Urbaniak has been writing her own songs since she was 11 years old. She made her stage début at the age of 14. Music runs in her blood, she is the daughter of giants of jazz – Urszula Dudziak and Michał Urbaniak. The music industry values her great voice and excellent flow, consequently, she is invited to cooperation by the most notable personalities of the Polish music scene. Her voice is best known from Andrzej Smolik’s solo albums (well known single “Who Told You” – this is Mika!) and guest recordings and performances with, among other, Grzegorz Markowski, Mietek Szcześniak, Novika, O.S.T.R., Litory and – obviously – Michał Urbaniak.
Mika’s solo debut took place in 2009. The album “Closer” was well received both by the audience and the critics – gold record and the award of the Polish phonographic industry – Fryderyk 2010 – for the album of the year in pop are a proof of that. The album features i.a. the hit “In my dreams”. The excellent Troy Miller (known for his collaborations with Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson and Roy Ayers) was responsible for production. Mika’s second solo album “Follow you”, produced by Victor Davies, was released in 2012. Her latest, third album “Once in a Lifetime”, produced again by Victor Davies, was released on December 1st, 2014. The album is inspired by the 30s swing music combined with modern hip hop beats and elements of pop.
Electro-Acoustic Beat Sessions had performed in Lublin once, in the framework of Eclectic Garden at Wirydarz of the Centre for Culture in Lublin, in September 2013. A friendship and a partnership between EABS and the singer Paulina Przybysz was born out of that project. This time they are back for the Lublin Jazz festival, with an even more extensive lineup. If you want to experience an unique concert, you can not miss it.
